Ottawa

Canada's capital is often described as a government town, and that description does it no favours. Ottawa is a bilingual river city of roughly a million people, built where the Ottawa, Rideau and Gatineau rivers meet, on the unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe. Its institutions are national; its texture is local.

Understanding the city

Queen Victoria chose Bytown as the capital in 1857 — a compromise between Toronto, Montréal, Québec City and Kingston, and a defensible distance from the American border. The name changed to Ottawa, the lumber trade built the early fortunes, and the federal apparatus arrived afterward.

That origin still explains the shape of the place. Two provinces face each other across the water, so a single afternoon can move between Ontario and Québec, English and French, federal grandeur and neighbourhood scale. The national museums are clustered within walking distance of one another, and almost all of them are within sight of the river.

What visitors underestimate is how quickly the city ends. Gatineau Park's escarpment trails begin twenty minutes from Parliament Hill; the Rideau and Ottawa rivers are used year-round for paddling, cycling and, in February, skating. Ottawa's culture is outdoor first and institutional second.

The Rideau Canal

A UNESCO World Heritage Site completed in 1832 and still operating as a working canal in summer. In deep winter a central stretch is maintained as the Rideau Canal Skateway — a skating surface running through the middle of the city, weather permitting.

National Gallery of Canada

Moshe Safdie's glass and granite building on Sussex Drive holds the country's largest collection of Canadian and Indigenous art. Louise Bourgeois's spider sculpture Maman stands outside, facing Parliament Hill.

The Gothic Revival seat of federal government. Centre Block is closed for a multi-year rehabilitation, with the House of Commons and Senate sitting in temporary chambers nearby — check availability before planning a tour.

Neighbourhoods

ByWard Market

Founded in 1826, one of Canada's oldest continuously operating public markets. Farm stalls and flower vendors by day, a dense grid of bars and late-night counters after dark.

Hintonburg & Wellington West

The city's most reliable strip for independent coffee, small galleries and owner-run restaurants — a former working-class west-end district now carrying much of Ottawa's studio culture.

Little Italy (Preston Street)

Espresso bars, trattorias and Ottawa's most animated street during major football tournaments. Walkable from Dow's Lake and the canal path.

Sandy Hill & Lowertown

Embassies, 19th-century stone houses and the University of Ottawa give these neighbourhoods the bilingual, transient, argumentative texture that defines the capital.

Gatineau, Québec

Across the Ottawa River and a different province entirely. The Canadian Museum of History sits on the far bank with the best view of Parliament Hill anywhere in the region.

Westboro

River beaches, outfitters and brunch. The Trans Canada Trail and Ottawa River pathway run straight through it, which is how most locals arrive.

December – March

Winter

Genuinely cold, and the city leans into it. Winterlude, the federally run winter festival, runs across February weekends in Ottawa and Gatineau. Skateway conditions depend entirely on the ice — check daily before you go.

April – May

Spring

The Canadian Tulip Festival in May traces back to the wartime relationship between Canada and the Netherlands. Commissioners Park at Dow's Lake carries the largest display.

June – August

Summer

Festival season: the Ottawa Jazz Festival and Bluesfest anchor the calendar, Canada Day fills the downtown core on 1 July, and the river pathways become the main way to move around.

September – November

Autumn

The strongest month to visit. Gatineau Park, twenty minutes from downtown, turns over completely; museums are quiet again and restaurant tables open up.

Getting here

Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport (YOW) is about 20 minutes south of downtown. VIA Rail runs frequent service from Toronto and Montréal into Ottawa Station.

OC Transpo runs the O-Train light rail and bus network; downtown is walkable end to end. Bike paths follow both sides of the canal and the Ottawa River.

English and French are both in constant use. Service in either language is standard across federal institutions and most of Gatineau operates primarily in French.
